FLEET

We focus on managing small expedition and destination cruise ships at a four star plus standard. Small ship cruising offers comprehensive itineraries, normally concentrating on a particular area or theme. The itinerary is paramount and the small size of the vessels means that you will be able to visit places that larger vessels cannot go to. Expedition cruises offer visits to out of the way destinations and many landings ashore are made by Zodiac landing craft. Cruises such as these appeal to the more adventurous and those who enjoy the natural world.

M/S Island Sky and M/S Caledonian Sky

Salén Ship Management are the proud managers of the sister ships M/S Island Sky and M/S Caledonian Sky, two of the finest small cruise ships in the industry.

Cruising with our ships and Noble Caledonia
The M/S Island Sky and the M/S Caledonian Sky are on a long term charter to Noble Caledonia in London. The Island Sky carries out cruises in the Western Hemisphere including the Baltic, the Norwegian fjords, the White Sea, the British Isles, the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Black Sea, the Atlantic Islands, South America and the Caribbean.

The Caledonian Sky will operate in the Eastern Hemisphere from the Russian Far East and Alaska in the north to Australia and New Zealand in the south, visiting Japan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the islands of the South Pacific.

Our third ship - M/S Sea Explorer I

In October 2014 the fleet was extended with one more sister ship, M/S Sea Explorer I. Salén Ship Management took over the management in September 2015 and in April 2016 she will undertake an extensive upgrade. After refurbishment she will be renamed Hebridean Sky and join the two sister ships as a part of the Noble Caledonia Sky Ship fleet.

M/S Hebridean Sky will specialise in the Arctic and Antarctica with expedition cruises including the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. For the northern summer she moves to the Arctic including Greenland and Iceland. En route between north and south she will sail the Pacific coast of South America alternating with Atlantic cruises to the islands of Cape Verde.

About the ships

All three ships were built in Italy in 1991 and 1992 to a high specification. The Caledonian Sky was refurbished in 2012, the Island Sky in 2013, and the Sea Explorer I will be upgraded and refurbished in 2016.

Cabins
The ships offer exceptionally spacious and well-designed cabins. All cabins are in fact suites with a sitting room area and some have private balconies; twin suites range from 21 to 30 square metres. The feeling of luxury is enhanced by the wood panelling and brass, which predominates throughout the vessel conveying the atmosphere of a private yacht. The passenger accommodation is arranged over five decks and all suites have outside views. Each suite affords considerable comfort with en-suite bathroom, large wardrobes, vanity table with large mirror and excellent storage.

Public Space

Due to the generous size of the suites, our maximum complement of passengers is 114-118, although a vessel of this size is capable of carrying many more. The spacious and finely decorated public rooms include a large lounge, an elegant bar with piano, a library stocked with fiction and reference books along with a selection of games and an elegant single sitting dining room. Outside there is an outdoor restaurant and bar where meals are served in warm weather under shade. On the top deck there is a further observation and sun deck with comfortable deck furniture for sun bathing or relaxing with a book.

Dining
A benefit of a small ship is the quality of the cuisine. With only one sitting and a maximum of just over 100 passengers, the galley is able to provide delicious meals.

Comfort & Security
The Island Sky, The Caledonian Sky, and the Sea Explorer I are all equipped with the latest safety, navigation and communications equipment along with roll stabilizers to minimize the ships motion. On board you will also find a clinic and doctor and a lift that serves all decks. Smoking on board is restricted to outside decks only.

Shore excursions
Where possible we go alongside in port. In remote, undeveloped areas or places with restricted access, we use local tenders. During the winter months when the vessels are operating expedition cruises we employ the vessel's Zodiacs. These inflatable craft, offer marvellous manoeuvrability allowing us access to otherwise impossible landing places.

A Unique Atmosphere
On board there is a high ratio of crew to passengers, the crew being mainly Filipino and Scandinavian/European. Our Swedish captains and officers are experienced mariners, many having been in service aboard large 2 000 plus passenger vessels, who now prefer a less frantic life aboard a small ship. If, like them and us, you prefer a more peaceful life at sea, you will find the Island Sky, the Caledonian Sky, and the Sea Explorer I perfect ships. The atmosphere on board is more akin to a private yacht or country hotel. A little music in the lounge or bar after dinner, guest speakers, informative port briefings from our cruise director and of course good food and fine wines.
